So the long awaited day finally arrived. We left to check into the hospital at 8PM on Sunday December 19. Justin and I were very anxious and ready to meet our little angel. This was not the way Justin wanted the labor to happen, he really wanted to make a mad dash to the hospital but that did not happen. Now that we are done, I am pretty glad we had the time to prepare and take our time to settle in the hospital.
Here are some photos of Justin and I right before we left for the hospital
My doctor told me that the hospital can get hot and that we should bring a portable fan for labor. This was Excellent advice and I would recommend everyone do this. When we got to the hospital it was so hot I was glad I had the fan.
When we arrived they immediately hooked me up to the monitors and started watching the baby and I's heart rate. Before I checked into the hospital I had never felt any contractions and even though my doctor told me I was having them.. I was not sure it was really happening. The nurse came into my room within the first hour I was there saying that I had had some contractions and that the baby's heart rate did not respond well to the contractions. There were going to give me medicine to soften my cervix but decided not to due to the doctor not being in the hospital and her poor reaction to the contractions.
The next morning December 20, 2010 the doctor came in at about 7:30 and started the drip and broke my water. By about noon I was 2 CM dilated and I felt like I was there forever. I was not having any pain so that was a good thing. The nurse kept asking me if I wanted the epidural and I told her I would take it but when I started feeling pain. About 1:00 I started to feel something so I asked her for the medication, she did not tell me that I had to drain 1.5 bags of IV fluid before I got the medication... had I would have known that I would have taken the drugs earlier. I felt the contractions for about an hour or so. There were not too bad but I am glad I got the epidural when I did. The Doctor came in to give me the epidural and I was so surprised at how I felt almost nothing and how amazing I felt right after I got the medicine. I felt nothing and I was basically able to nap all the way through my active labor phase. At about 3 the Doctor said I was not moving much and when 5:00 came around, we would have to talk about options. This was a little scary for me, I was afraid the only option was going to be surgery. They came in to check me at about 4 and I was 4 CM so I was moving but just not as fast as I wanted. My doctor was pleased with the progression and said she expected me to progress about 1 CM an hour. Within the next hour the baby's heart rate dropped and the nurse came in to see what was going on. She checked me and said I was 6 CM and she was shocked at how fast things were moving. The nurse left to call the doctor and came back about 30 min later and checked again. This time she said my cervix was gone and I was about 8-9 CM so things were about to take place. It felt like everything was moving so fast. The doctor and 2 nurses came in and it was time to push. I pushed for about 5 contractions and Riley was here. I did not even break a sweat. That was the easiest thing I have ever done! She came out perfect. She has a full head of thick brown hair and is absolutely beautiful. Justin and I could not be more proud!!!!
My family was in the waiting room and were able to spend about 30 min with her after birth before she went to the nursery for her exam.
The first night we kept her in our room because we wanted to spend some time with out little girl. Besides us having to get up to feed her... she slept like a champ! She did not cry and did not wake us up. I hate to jinx myself but so far she is a great baby! Its the nurses that work us up every hour or so.. not Riley!
Baby and I are both doing fine. I have just a few stitches and am healing well. Riley has been eating and is very alert. The doctors are happy with both our progress and we are hoping we will get released tomorrow.
Justin and I have appreciated everyone's thoughts and prayers. We are so grateful to have so many great friends and family! We cannot wait for everyone to meet our angel!
