Riley had ear tube surgery on November 2, 2017. This was Riley's 4th set of ear tubes. We have been through this before and were pretty familiar with the process but this was our first time with the Dr. Ronald J. Vilela, MD. The surgery was scheduled downtown at Texas Children's Hospital and we could not have been more pleased with the entire experience. The entire staff was fantastic with Riley and with us. They moved very quickly and did not make us wait at all, and she even had a patient care specialist that was with her the entire time and explained everything to her. My only regret is we did not go to this hospital earlier! This was by far a superior experience to the previous surgeries we have had. Her last tube surgery she had a very hard time coming out of anesthesia and was yelling and screaming and fighting so the Anesthesiologist told us he would work to counteract that with the medication he gave her. This time her coming out of anesthesia was smooth but I think because of the differing medications they gave her and her empty stomach - she was very nauseous and got sick.
The surgery went well overall but the Dr could not get the right tube in so was only able to replace the left. Based on what he saw the Dr saw while in surgery he was fairly certain Riley has a cholesteatoma. A cholesteatoma is an abnormal, noncancerous skin growth that can develop in the middle section of your ear, behind the eardrum. It may be a birth defect, but it's most commonly caused by repeated middle ear infections. A cholesteatoma often develops as a cyst, or sac, that sheds layers of old skin. We would need to schedule an MRI to confirm and if she does have this cyst more surgeries would follow.

Nauseous from all the meds but at least her smile is back!
Two weeks after surgery Riley had her MRI which confirmed she does have the cholesteatoma. The doctor has noticed that the cyst has eroded the bone between her middle and outer ear. She will have surgery on December 29 to remove the cyst and preform any hearing bone repairs he can. He stated that the goal of the first surgery is to remove the cyst. In 6 months from the first surgery he will want to do another surgery to ensure the cyst has not grown back and do some hearing bone repairs. The Dr feels confident he can repair the bone and restore any hearing damage but prayers are appreciated!

Carter's class had a gobble gathering this year that I was able to attend. It was super cute and the kids did a great job singing the Thanksgiving songs! I may be bias but I think Carter is one cute pilgrim!

Soccer season ended wrapped up this month. Carter was not really into the game but Riley has really been playing fantastic. She played in a new league this year in Kingwood Alliance and was on a team called the Cheatas. She scored the most goals this season and I could not be prouder of how she is playing. She really loves the game!
